Seeing Yourself Looking
‘Only the deeply deluded maintain that objective reality can define what’s real’ Philip-lorca diCorcia.
How can we define what is real? The act of composing, staging, and taking a photograph is unnatural in itself. Whether the subject is in a studio or in their own bedroom, whether they are comfortable or uncomfortable, the act of pointing a camera at someone is deviant and effects how one behaves.
I have used the gaze as a means of provoking different reactions within the subject. In the first image the subject takes their own portrait using a mirror and a shutter release. As they look upon their naked body they reveal their own vision of their self. In the Second image they are fixed on my gaze. The subject is now conscious of an imposing other and their second portrait is revealed.

Waiting for Alex
This documentary project follows the life of a woman who exists on the margins, strong and weak, loved and alone, happy and sad. She lives a life not many of us could imagine. I have aimed to create a staged realism, the idea that the camera is at the edge of the subject's personal space. The situations shown are not explicit but I have aimed to use codes and signs to create a curious yet open ended narrative.
